Strathclyde Country Park

Strathclyde Loch on a calm day, Strathclyde Country Park, Scotland

Strathclyde Country Park sits just outside Motherwell and is one of those places that quietly delivers every single time. The path around the loch is almost entirely flat, which makes it a favourite for runners — it hosts a parkrun on Saturday mornings, and the course is about as kind as a 5k gets if you’re chasing a personal best.

We tend to come here for a more leisurely wander, but the mix of people you’ll encounter says a lot about the place: joggers, cyclists, dog walkers, families with pushchairs. The flat tarmac and wide paths make it genuinely accessible for just about everyone.

Out on the water, there always seems to be something going on — rowers, sailing boats, the occasional kayak. The park offers watersport activities, which gives the whole place a lively, active feel even on quieter days.

Parking is easy enough once you know where to go — follow the road around the back of the boathouse and you’ll find a large car park. Toilets are available on site, and the Boathouse Café is right there if you need a warm-up after your walk, though we’ve yet to try it ourselves.

A solid choice for an easy, sociable day out within easy reach of Glasgow.
